WHAT TO DO IF YOU SUSPECT AN ANIMAL IS RABID?

  • Should you suspect that a wild animal has rabies, contact the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) at: 1-800-667-1940 or 705-475-5550. If you are unable to contact the MNR, call the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

  • Should you suspect that a domestic animal has rabies, contact the Canadian Food Inspection Agency at: 1-800-442-2342 or 705-495-5995.

  • If it becomes necessary to destroy an animal or if the suspect animal is already dead, use gloves and a shovel to handle the carcass. Place the carcass in a double bag. Do not damage the head if the animal has had contact with humans, pets or livestock so it can be tested for rabies.
