COLORECTAL CANCER PREVENTION AND SCREENING

COLORECTAL CANCER

In Ontario, colorectal cancer is the second most diagnosed cancer for men and the third most diagnosed for women.

Colorectal cancer is the second highest cause of death from cancer.

You can reduce your risk for colorectal cancer by developing a healthy lifestyle and having a regular screening.

Most cases of colorectal cancer are in people over the age of 50 years. If it is detected early enough, it can be treated.

The Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) – an easy way to check for colorectal cancer

If you are 50 years or older and have an average risk of colorectal cancer, you should have a FOBT at least every two years.

Your doctor, nurse practitioner, pharmacist or Telehealth nurse can give you a fecal occult blood test kit. They’re free!

To do a FOBT, you must take three separate stool samples at home. The kit is then sent to a laboratory. They will check for any blood in your stool that is only seen with a microscope.

If you have a family medical history of colorectal cancer, speak with your health care provider concerning tests that would be appropriate for you.

Reduce Your Risk

You cannot change some of the risk factors for colorectal cancer, such as age and family medical history. However, you can make healthy lifestyle choices to reduce your risk.

The Canadian Cancer Society recommends that you:

  • Be physically active – at least 30 minutes every day, working up to 60 minutes a day
  • Maintain a healthy body weight
  • Eat a variety of healthy foods. Eat balanced meals that include a variety of fruits and vegetables; consume foods high in fiber; avoid processed meats; limit red meat; drink milk; use garlic when cooking
  • Limit how much alcohol you drink
  • Live smoke free
  • Talk to your doctor about your risk
