Food Security

Food Security

Community food security is defined as a situation where all community residents obtain a safe, culturally acceptable, nutritious diet through a sustainable food system that maximizes community self-reliance and social justice.1

Food Security means…
• People can afford and are able to access nutritious and safe food that they enjoy eating.
• Everyone can access food in a way that does not compromise human dignity.
• Food is grown and accessed in ways that are environmentally sound and socially just.
• Everyone will have enough food to eat.
• We can feel confident about the safety and the quality of the food we eat.

Food Security Inventory 2010 includes more information about community food security and provides a listing of food programs and food-related initiatives in our communities.

Nutritious Food Basket
Every year in Ontario, Public Health Dietitians take part in a project called the “Nutritious Food Basket” (NFB). They visit grocery stores across their health unit districts to cost a set list of food items. This list represents a healthy eating pattern that follows Canada’s Food Guide and reflects the eating patterns of Canadians.
