Recommended Procedure following a "Needle Stick Injury".
- A "Needle stick Injury" is any puncture wound caused by a medical device such as: syringes (needles), Epipen (used by people with severe allergies), lancets and other diabetic testing equipment such as a glucometer.
- Immediately:
· Wash the area thoroughly with warm running water and soap.
· If peroxide, or other antiseptic solution is available, wash solution over the wound
· Cover wound with a bandage
- Contact the parent/guardian, if child is in daycare or school setting.
- Advise the parent/guardian to contact their physician immediately.
- Advise the parent/guardian to contact the Communicable Disease Control program at the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit @ (705) 474-1400 as soon as possible.
- Do not pick up the object and walk with it. You may end up with a "Needle stick Injury".
- Bring a "puncture proof" container* to the area where the object is and unscrew the top.
- Place the object in the container.
- Replace the lid and return the container to the designated area.
- Remind the students/children that they are not to pick up sharp objects but to advise a teacher/adult. The teacher/adult will look after it.
*Note: Schools and daycares should keep a puncture proof container in an easily accessible area. The container should be labeled "Hazardous Waste". Enviro-Med Canada Inc. will dispose of these free on charge (1141 Carmichael Drive, North Bay, (705) 474-3456).
Please call 474-1400 and ask for the Communicable Disease Control Program if you would like further information.
